How to adjust
web browser security settings
If you
keep returning to the download page after installing the
latest plugin, you may need to adjust your browser's security
settings:.
Internet
Explorer
Installing
the plugin for Internet Explorer should be a smooth exercise,
but you need to ensure that the install completed. First
the program is downloaded, and if the option is chosen to
"open" after download, the installer should begin
its process automatically (there may be a delay while the
installer is unpacked and starts the installation).
- Check that
JavaScript is enabled
- Check that
Java is enabled
- Check that you have the
latest Java VM
- Check that
ActiveX should be enabled to allow for Signed
ActiveX controls,
- After a plugin upgrade IE
sometimes needs to be restarted and sometimes you need
to restart the computer (depends on Windows version and
local file permissions).
Firefox
Firfox
behaves quite differently and uses a different plugin to
Internet Explorer.
- Check
that
JavaScript is enabled
- Check
that
Java is enabled
- Check
that you have the latest Java VM.
Web
browsers and Java
Users
with different types of browsers on the same machine may
notice that each uses a different plugin module and so on.
Java runtime is sometimes offered as a separate download
from the main browser component, and earlier versions of
the Java modules had flaws. They can also be damaged quite
easily and you should
update to the latest version.
Note
Other
odd anomalies can occur, especially if testing the system
simultaneously with multiple browsers (or compromising applications)
in trying to foil the system's security
