Settings for Internet Explorer Information Bar

The latest Internet Explorer (SP2) displays an Information Bar (top of the web page just below the address bar) with information about downloads and blocked content such as pop-up windows, JavaScript, applets and ActiveX plugins. This information helps to avoid potentially harmful files that you might otherwise accept from the Internet.

After updating to SP2 the settings will be set for the highest security possible which may prevent the viewing of harmless content such as Flash and many other web features which require a plugin. Copysafe also requires a plugin to function and to allow proper installation and viewing of Copysafe content, you will need to adjust your security settings.

Will adjusting the settings expose my computer?

Not if it's done carefully. Java and JavaScript actually do not have permission to affect your system. ActiveX plugins do have system level permissions, but it is safe to trust ActiveX from trusted providers.

How do you know which ActiveX to trust?

ArtistScope (Copysafe), like Macromedia (Flash) and Microsoft, sign their plugins and installers with a digital certificate known as Authenticode. Authenticode certificates are only provided to developers that meet stringent identity checks. Authenticode certificates can only be bound to applications by their owner, and any attempt to alter a component once signed will remove the authenticity.

Can you trust plugins provided by any Copysafe web site?

If it is signed by ArtistScope... most certainly. Copysafe is licensed to web sites under signed agreement which permits users to provide the downloads from their own site if able. If the Copysafe plugin installer has been signed with an ArtistScope Authenticode Certificate, regardless of where you download it from, it can be trusted as "authentic".

Can I turn off the Information Bar?

Yes you can, but we don't recommend it (instructions are below). However it is safe to enable signed controls (as above).

How can you enable Authenticode signed controls?

If you are certain that you want to allow the ActiveX control, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. On the Security tab, click Custom Level.

The Default Level will automatically set your security level to trust signed controls, but prompt for all others that are not signed.. If you are on a networked workstation you may be unable to change this setting, your administrator might have control over the setting. To check and see what these settings are, or to define your own, click on Custom Level.

To stop blocking file and software downloads with the Information Bar

This procedure will allow Web sites to automatically prompt you when downloading files and software (bypassing the Information Bar).

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  • On the Security tab, click Custom Level.
  • Do one or both of the following:
  • Click Enable for all options involving Authenticode and trusted certificates.
  • Click Prompt for all options that are untrusted.

To install the ActiveX control:

  1. Click the Information Bar.
  2. Click Install Software.

To turn off Information Bar messages about blocked pop-up windows

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.
  3. Clear the Show Information Bar when a pop-up is blocked check box.

If you are certain that you want to allow the page to run scripts and ActiveX controls on your local machine, follow the steps below:

  1. Click the Information Bar.
  2. Click Allow Blocked Content.

Click Related Topics for information about how to decide if you should trust a Web site or publisher.

"This content might not be displayed properly. The file was restricted because the content doesn’t match its security information. Click here for options..."

You should be sure that you know what the file will do to your computer before you decide to display the content without restrictions. This situation might pose a security risk to your computer.

To display this content without restrictions, follow the steps below:

  1. Click the Information Bar.
  2. Click Show Restricted Content.

What if I have already blocked the software publisher?

Files with blocked publishers are not allowed to run.

How do I resolve this issue?

You can unblock a publisher of an add-on by using Manage Add-ons in Internet Explorer. To unblock a publisher to enable the download of a specific file, you can remove the publisher from the Untrusted Publishers list. To do this, in Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Options, click the Content tab, and then remove the publisher’s name from the Untrusted Publishers list.
